I know this is the first time I've heard about it from this group of people that I spend time with, however, I am already sick of hearing about the Mayans and its' only January. If it keeps up at this pace I may, in fact, put myself into a chemically induced coma until 2013.

Cold fact is that the Mayans were fucking savages who literally went missing. They don't know shit.  :troll:

The Mayans never disappeared, but they did abandon their cities and advanced civilization for unknown reasons. There are still many Mayans in Mexico and Guatemala, and they are still fairly warlike. Their uprisings, including the Zapatistas, have been going on for several hundred years.

Ah. Where did they go after they abandoned their cities? Any theories as to why they did this?

They simply went into the jungles and lived in villages instead of cities. There are many theories as to why they abandoned their relatively advanced societies, which include invasions, massive war, and the one theory that I like is that it was part of their spirituality. At certain times on their calenders they would abandon society and go into the jungle--maybe similar to a sacrifice. It was perhaps a religious reason to just give it all up. The date on their calender that coincides with this cycle is coming up this year. It's a big date where certain planets align with the sun and moon.
